Want to know what's happening in contemporary art now? Then visit Altermodern, the fourth Tate Triennial at Tate Britain. This selection of new contemporary art presents some of the best that current British art has to offer, alongside international artists who are working with similar themes. It includes artists working in all media, from painting, to film and video, to extraordinary installations and features many new works being shown for the first time. This year's Triennial has been curated by Nicolas Bourriaud who co-founded the influential contemporary gallery Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2002.

Bourriaud is proposing the new art term 'Altermodern' to describe how artists are responding to the increasingly global context in which we all now live. Altermodern claims that the period defined as postmodernism has come to an end and a new culture for the 21st century is emerging. Increased communication, travel and migration are having a huge effect on the way we live now. Altermodern describes how artists at the forefront of their generation are responding to this globalised culture with a new spirit and energy. Is postmodernism dead? What does it mean to be modern today? Come along to the exhibition and decide for yourself.

Vogais - Claude Lévi-Strauss

A negro, E branco, I rubro, U verde, O azul, vogais,
Ainda desvendarei seus mistérios latentes:
A, velado voar de moscas reluzentes
Que zumbem ao redor dos acres lodaçais;

E, nívea candidez de tendas e areais,
Lanças de gelo, reis brancos, flores trementes;
I, escarro carmim, rubis a rir nos dentes
Da ira ou da ilusão em tristes bacanais;

Que as rugas vão urdindo entre brumas e escolhos;

O, supremos Clamor cheio de estranhos versos,
Silêncios assombrados de anjos e universos;
- Ô! Ômega, o sol violeta dos Seus Olhos!

Pantone - Gerard Richter

4900 Colours is parallel to Richter's design for the south transept window of Cologne Cathedral, which replaced the stained glass that was destroyed in World War II. The window, unveiled in August 2007, comprises 11,500 hand-blown squares of glass in 72 colours that are derived from the palette of the original Medieval glazing. The Seemingly arbitrary distribution of colours was generated using a specially developed computer programme and this renewed interest in using chance to define composition led the artist to develop the concept for4900 Colours.

Richter produced the first in his series of grid paintings in 1966 in which he replicated, in large scale, industrial colour charts produced by paint manufacturers. As with his photo-paintings, the use of found material as a source removed the subjective compositional preferences of the artist, however, the Colour Chart Paintings took this a step further, eradicating any hierarchy of subject or representational intent, and focusing on colour to create an egalitarian language of art.

A Vida

10 million photos from the legendary archives of LIFE magazine and thousands more added every day. Whatever you want to look at, whether it happened an hour ago, a century ago, or any time in between, you'll be able to find it quickly, easily, and for free.
Ninety-seven percent of the collection, which stretches from 1860 to today, has never been seen by the public. It's now online for the first time through the joint work of LIFE and Google. [txt do site da life, obrigada]

Welcome inside the house of Victor & Rolf

Captured during the final week of their ground-breaking exhibition at London's Barbican Gallery, this series of films offers a glimpse behind the scenes and into the creative universe of Viktor & Rolf. Featuring an interview with the Dutch duo recorded live during the symposium, framed by three presentations exploring their heritage, designs and the retrospective itself and completed by a video of their subsequent collection 'Funny Face', this project affords a rare insight into the creativity of two of the world's leading fashion stars.

CMB - AIGA

Fashion talk

As former legendary Vogue USA and Harper's Bazaar editor once said, "bad taste is better than no taste."

Out of This World: Deleuze and the Philosophy of Creation

I only have one thing to tell you: stick to the concrete, and always return to it. Multiplicity, ritornello, sensation, etc., are all developed into pure concepts, but strictly speaking, they are inseparable from the passage from one concept to another. This is why we must avoid giving one term ascendancy over the others: every notion must drag in all the others, in its turn, and when the time is right .... The more gifted a philosopher is, I believe, the more he or she tends to leave the concrete behind, at least in the beginning. Resist this tendency, at least from time to time, just long enough to come back to perceptions, to affects, which will redouble your concepts. (Deleuze, 2006: 363)

Em busca do tempo perdido

YES WE CAN

"Yes We Can" is a collage style music video inspired by a speech delivered by Senator and now President-elect Barack Obama following the 2008 New Hampshire primary, derived from similar union catch cries. The song was released on February 2, 2008 by the Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am on Dipdive.com and also on YouTube. It was honored with the first-ever Emmy Award for Best New Approaches in Daytime Entertainment. The term "Yes We Can!" became a secondary slogan for Barack Obama's campaign.
Although the lyrics are entirely quotations from
Sen. Obama's concession speech in the New Hampshire primary, the Obama campaign had no involvement in its production. The viral music video, shot in a sparse black-and-white, features Barack Obama's image in collage fashion; the performers echo his words in a hip-hop call-and-response manner as his voice plays in the background. The music video was directed by Jesse Dylan, the son of Bob Dylan.

Since the original posting on YouTube and Dipdive, the video has been watched more than 21 million times.

AS VIAGENS DE GULLIVERJonathan Swift
A noite chegara.

"I'm not interested in tailoring,
but in the pull and push of
the garment against the body"
Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne Westwood is famous for her witty re-interpretations of historical dress and textiles. She is a great fan of british fabrics and crafts. She has used traditional scottish tartans for many years - from bondage trousers to tailored suits. She even designed her own tartan for her Anglomania collection, winter 93/4, made by Lochcarron. It was named MacAndreas after her husband Andreas Kronthaler.
Some history:
Patterned woollen cloth used for kilts has been popular in Scotland for hundreds of year. Patterns were standardised during the 1800s when factory made tartans became popular. Certain patterns are traditionally associated with clans, although the history of the patterns is quite complex. Tartan patterns are created by the use of different coloured wool for the warp (the vertical threads on a loom) and the weft, which goes left to right in the weaving.

Costuma funcionar.

Materials: 2 ounces of Paton Beehive Fingering, 3-ply; a pair of knitting pins No. 10.
Tension And Measurements: Worked at a tension of 7 sts. to the inch in width, the turban will fit a head measurement of 22 inches, but from these directions a cap of any size can be made, by repeating the sections accordingly. These form the skull-cap, and the bandeau is worked separately and sewn on.
Abbreviations (To Be Read Before Working): K., knit plain; p., purl; st., stitch; s.s., stocking-stitch (k. on right side and p. back).

To Work The Cap
Begin at the centre-front and cast on 40 sts., which determines the depth of the cap. K. 1 row into the back of the sts. * K. 18, turn and k. back ; k. 20, turn and k. back;. k. 22, turn and k. back.
K. 18 rows more in this way, working 2 sts. more on every alternate row, when all 40 sts. will have been worked.
Repeat from * 9 times more, then cast off.

The Bandeau
This is worked in bands in s.s., the first 12 rows having the purl side facing, and the next 8 rows the right side facing. Cast on 240 sts. and k. 1 row into the backs of the sts.
Work 12 rows in s.s., beginning with a p. row.
Work 8 rows, beginning with a k. row and ending with a p. row.
Work 8 rows, beginning with a p. row. Repeat the last 16 rows once more, then 4 rows more on the last band. Cast off loosely.
Note that the 3 rolls with the p. side facing form the right side of the bandeau.

To Make up the Turban
With the same wool sew the cast-on edge to the cast-off edge of the cap, be-ginning at the face edge, then run through the sts. at the centre, and draw up. Place the cap on the head with the seam at centre-front, and pin the centre of the bandeau to the centre-back of cap. Bring an end round each side and twist once at the front; carry the ends back and sew them under the band about level with the ears. Take care to keep the 3 p. rolls uppermost. Stitch the lowest roll loosely to the cap edge, leaving about 2 inches unattached under the front twist. At the back loosely stitch the second k. band to the cap.

Eco-chic - the fashion paradox

Sandy Black examines the way the fashion industry is changing to accommodate the environmental concerns of the twenty first century. She exposes the naked truth behind the clothes we wear, exploring alternate practices and assessing their feasibility. Using case studies of designers from the catwalks and the high street, including Katherine Hamnett, Marks and Spencer and Linda Loudermilk, the book illustrates how these processes are finding their way into the industry, and shows how ethical fashion has moved on from its traditional connotations of hemp shirts and rope sandals. Fashion and environmental awareness are two concerns that do not comfortably sit side by side. Over the past ten years, high street fashion, led by global chains, has become ever more affordable and disposable. The sourcing of materials, the manufacture and the distribution of clothes have become the dirty secrets of the beautiful industry.

Reserve.

Very vintage

Vintage has been a key reference point in fashion for many years. Contemporary outlets, such as Beyond Retro and Rokit, amongst others, have helped push vintage into the mainstream, and it is now more widely associated with contemporary style icons than musty charity shops. Very Vintage: The Guide to Vintage Patterns and Clothing tells us all we need to know about vintage clothing, providing a stunning visual overview of seven decades of fashion, illustrated with original fashion photographs and clothing patterns. The Perfect guide for fashionistas and anyone who loves clothes!

means bunch or cluster in turkish. With the idea of using less material on book storage, conventional hook form and function is applied on these bookshelf, making a library, much lighter than the books it holds. Pieces hooked on each other at a single point give the impression of lightness.

Muito bom:

In the films of Alfred Hitchcock, architecture plays an important role. Having worked as a set designer in the early 1920s, Hitchcock remained intensely concerned with the art direction of his films. In addition, the ’master of suspense’ made some remarkable single-set films, such as Rope and Rear Window, that explicitly deal with the way the confines of the set relate to those of the architecture on screen. Spaces of confinement also turn up in the ’Gothic plot’ of films in which the house is presented as an uncanny labyrinth and a trap. Furthermore, it became a Hitchcock hallmark to use famous monuments as the location for a climactic scene. Last but not least, Hitchcock used architectural motifs such as stairs and windows, which are closely connected to Hitchcockian narrative structures (suspense) or typical Hitchcock themes (voyeurism). Apart from dealing with these issues extensively, Steven Jacobs discusses at length a series of domestic buildings with the help of a number of reconstructed floor plans especially made for this publication. Steven Jacobs is an art historian who has published widely on the photographic and cinematic representations of architecture, cities, and landscapes. He currently lectures on film history at Sint Lukas College of Art Brussels and the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, and on urban studies at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
