Modern literature

Don't forget - the Oil

Richard Wilson has described his installation 20:50 as both his 'party' and his 'megastar' piece.

Originally created in 1987 within Matt's Gallery, east London - a venue that specialises in site-specific art - 20:50 consists of a lake of used engine oil, a room flooded to waist-height with a shiny, reflective black mass, through which the viewer walks on a narrow, tapering jetty. Acting like a mirror, the oil reflects the ceiling of the gallery far beneath one's feet, producing a vertiginous and deeply disorientating effect of mid-air suspension - while the smell and tempting viscosity of the oil-liquid further unsettles and baffles one's immediate sensory impressions. Bought by Charles Saatchi in 1991 and now on permanent display in County Hall, 20:50 is an undeniably weird and thrilling experience, described by art critic Andrew Graham-Dixon as 'one of the masterpieces of the modern age.

Wilson's installations are always created on megalomaniac scale, though his publicly stated aim is relatively modest - to 'alter one's perceptions of space' by 'tweaking,'undoing' or 'changing'an (often vast) area of gallery or museum. By enlisting features of the building itself (a window, skylight, metal ceiling girders) and employing them within an installation, he transforms and exploits its very architecture. Away from the gallery, Wilson's bold distortion of the visual and built environment knows no bounds: a piece entitled Set North For Japan consists of a full-scale steel skeleton of his home in Streatham transplanted to a remote field in Japan... and turned upside down.

A Londoner by birth, Wilson will be 50 this year.

[this year means 2003, and the piece is no longer at the County Hall, unfortunately]

“Afterwards, when the piece is over, when you’ve stood up, taken your bow, and sat down again, when you’ve wiped your forehead, and your very important hands, you think: ‘I wish I were a professional boxer, the next round against the Steinway would be much more comfortable wearing shorts.’ “

Want to know what's happening in contemporary art now? Then visit Altermodern, the fourth Tate Triennial at Tate Britain. This selection of new contemporary art presents some of the best that current British art has to offer, alongside international artists who are working with similar themes. It includes artists working in all media, from painting, to film and video, to extraordinary installations and features many new works being shown for the first time. This year's Triennial has been curated by Nicolas Bourriaud who co-founded the influential contemporary gallery Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2002.

Bourriaud is proposing the new art term 'Altermodern' to describe how artists are responding to the increasingly global context in which we all now live. Altermodern claims that the period defined as postmodernism has come to an end and a new culture for the 21st century is emerging. Increased communication, travel and migration are having a huge effect on the way we live now. Altermodern describes how artists at the forefront of their generation are responding to this globalised culture with a new spirit and energy. Is postmodernism dead? What does it mean to be modern today? Come along to the exhibition and decide for yourself.

Vogais - Claude Lévi-Strauss

A negro, E branco, I rubro, U verde, O azul, vogais,
Ainda desvendarei seus mistérios latentes:
A, velado voar de moscas reluzentes
Que zumbem ao redor dos acres lodaçais;

E, nívea candidez de tendas e areais,
Lanças de gelo, reis brancos, flores trementes;
I, escarro carmim, rubis a rir nos dentes
Da ira ou da ilusão em tristes bacanais;

Que as rugas vão urdindo entre brumas e escolhos;

O, supremos Clamor cheio de estranhos versos,
Silêncios assombrados de anjos e universos;
- Ô! Ômega, o sol violeta dos Seus Olhos!

Pantone - Gerard Richter

4900 Colours is parallel to Richter's design for the south transept window of Cologne Cathedral, which replaced the stained glass that was destroyed in World War II. The window, unveiled in August 2007, comprises 11,500 hand-blown squares of glass in 72 colours that are derived from the palette of the original Medieval glazing. The Seemingly arbitrary distribution of colours was generated using a specially developed computer programme and this renewed interest in using chance to define composition led the artist to develop the concept for4900 Colours.

Richter produced the first in his series of grid paintings in 1966 in which he replicated, in large scale, industrial colour charts produced by paint manufacturers. As with his photo-paintings, the use of found material as a source removed the subjective compositional preferences of the artist, however, the Colour Chart Paintings took this a step further, eradicating any hierarchy of subject or representational intent, and focusing on colour to create an egalitarian language of art.

Welcome inside the house of Victor & Rolf

Captured during the final week of their ground-breaking exhibition at London's Barbican Gallery, this series of films offers a glimpse behind the scenes and into the creative universe of Viktor & Rolf. Featuring an interview with the Dutch duo recorded live during the symposium, framed by three presentations exploring their heritage, designs and the retrospective itself and completed by a video of their subsequent collection 'Funny Face', this project affords a rare insight into the creativity of two of the world's leading fashion stars.

CMB - AIGA

Fashion talk

As former legendary Vogue USA and Harper's Bazaar editor once said, "bad taste is better than no taste."

Out of This World: Deleuze and the Philosophy of Creation

I only have one thing to tell you: stick to the concrete, and always return to it. Multiplicity, ritornello, sensation, etc., are all developed into pure concepts, but strictly speaking, they are inseparable from the passage from one concept to another. This is why we must avoid giving one term ascendancy over the others: every notion must drag in all the others, in its turn, and when the time is right .... The more gifted a philosopher is, I believe, the more he or she tends to leave the concrete behind, at least in the beginning. Resist this tendency, at least from time to time, just long enough to come back to perceptions, to affects, which will redouble your concepts. (Deleuze, 2006: 363)

Em busca do tempo perdido

YES WE CAN

"Yes We Can" is a collage style music video inspired by a speech delivered by Senator and now President-elect Barack Obama following the 2008 New Hampshire primary, derived from similar union catch cries. The song was released on February 2, 2008 by the Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am on Dipdive.com and also on YouTube. It was honored with the first-ever Emmy Award for Best New Approaches in Daytime Entertainment. The term "Yes We Can!" became a secondary slogan for Barack Obama's campaign.
Although the lyrics are entirely quotations from
Sen. Obama's concession speech in the New Hampshire primary, the Obama campaign had no involvement in its production. The viral music video, shot in a sparse black-and-white, features Barack Obama's image in collage fashion; the performers echo his words in a hip-hop call-and-response manner as his voice plays in the background. The music video was directed by Jesse Dylan, the son of Bob Dylan.

Since the original posting on YouTube and Dipdive, the video has been watched more than 21 million times.

AS VIAGENS DE GULLIVERJonathan Swift
A noite chegara.
